Objective or summary?
Use a summary when you already have directly relevant experience. Consider an objective when applying for a first job, changing careers, returning after time away, or pursuing a specific internship or training role.
First-job example
Reliable high school graduate seeking a customer service role where strong communication, punctuality, and experience supporting school events can contribute to a welcoming, organized customer experience.
Student or internship example
Computer science student seeking a software development internship, bringing coursework in data structures, JavaScript projects, collaborative Git workflows, and a careful approach to testing and documentation.
Career-change example
Experienced hospitality supervisor transitioning into human resources coordination, offering transferable strengths in onboarding, scheduling, employee communication, confidential records, and conflict resolution.
Returning-to-work example
Organized administrative professional returning to the workforce with refreshed Microsoft Office skills and recent community volunteer experience coordinating schedules, records, and public communication.
Keep it focused
- Name the target role or field.
- Connect two or three relevant strengths to the employer’s needs.
- Mention training or transferable experience that supports the transition.
- Avoid vague statements about seeking growth, challenge, or a rewarding company.
